In a significant step towards modernising public transport, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin launched Russia's first autonomous tram on September 3, 2020. The event marks the beginning of a new era for Moscow's transport system, as Sobyanin has identified autonomous rail transport as a priority area for development in the city.

The autonomous tram will operate along route No.10 "Metro Shukinskaya - Ulitsa Kulakova" in Moscow's northwest. The launch comes as part of Sobyanin's plans to launch three more autonomous trams by the end of 2020, with the number expected to reach 15 by 2026.

Trials of the first autonomous metro train in Moscow are expected to begin this year, and after all testing stages, the autonomous metro train is planned to be put into operation next year. By 2030, two-thirds of Moscow's trams are expected to be autonomous, according to Sobyanin.

The company RZD (Russian Railways) is also planning the testing of an autonomous subway train in Moscow, further highlighting the city's commitment to embracing autonomous rail technology.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated development, Governor of Samara asked cabinet members not to "giggle" during a meeting. This light-hearted request comes as Moscow continues to focus on its ambitious plans for autonomous transport.

Elsewhere, a conversation between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping about immortality and organ transplants was aired on media, sparking widespread interest and discussion. However, the focus in Moscow remains firmly on the city's journey towards a more efficient and technologically advanced transport system.

As the autonomous tram begins its journey, Moscow residents can look forward to a smoother, more efficient, and potentially more frequent tram service in the near future. The city's commitment to autonomous transport is a testament to its forward-thinking approach and its dedication to providing its citizens with the best possible public services.
